Turning Totems Review
Turning Totems is a 5 reels and 11 pay lines slot with win both ways technology powered by Thunderkick. The name of the game describes the way the reels work as the reels don’t spin but the symbols remain in place yet simply turn to reveal new symbols.
The slot is playable on all devices from desktop straight through to mobile and tablet devices and can be played from as little as 10p a spin to a whopping 100 a spin if you are feeling lucky. In truth the slot might not be likeable for all as it can get frustrating when you’ve managed to form only winning combinations with the lowest paying symbol which seems to be the wooden carved eagle. The slot is however one of the very few that plays and displays excellently on both desktop and mobile devices.
If you’ve ever played the Esqueleto Explosivo slot then you will love this quirky and unique slot. It’s quite different from the status quo as it breaks away from the regular mechanical workings of modern slot machines.
For those who don’t know Totem Poles are carved wooden structures that are mostly associated with the North American indigenous people. The slot is a graphic beauty from the sun blazed backdrop to the little Indian with his feathered headwear.
Look & Feel
The Turning Totems slot powered by Thunderkick is a graphic delight with a unique theme and incredible designs. The reels are merely 5 gorgeously carved wooden Totems with eagles at the top. The symbols themselves also seem to be handcrafted and painted a variety of natural colours such as blue, orange and green. The colours except for the pink carved symbol could easily make you believe that it replicates the natural elements of nature such as wind, earth and fire. The backdrop of the slot is the desert with the sun blazing down in the background. To the left of your reels you will notice a short Indian man with a stick in his hand watching the totems to make sure they reward you graciously. On the screen you will also see massive rocks both nearby and in the distance, there are also a few gorgeous cacti to brighten up the dullness of the desert. Each of the symbols that have been hand crafted and painted have been designed with different masks and faces. The wild of this slot is a “sleeping” totem which could be quite handy once woken! Once you’ve unlocked the free spins round the backdrop will change from day to night with clouds and thundershowers on the screen. In celebration there will also be a firework display celebration the wonderful bonus round making you just a little more eager to hit it again.
Sound & Score
Besides their spectacular graphics Thunderkick has been known to add well-suited and fitting soundtracks to their slots. Turning Totems is no different, you will hear a flute playing in the background along with other natural instruments. As the slot plays off in the desert you will also hear the wind whistling in the background. The turning totems will have their own sound as they clunk to a stop. The Sleeping Totem is also announced with a special sound effect and each time you form a winning combination with any of the symbols they will make sounds linked to the Native American folks. As the scenery changes from day to night with the free spins the sound changes to something a bit more upbeat too creating a perfect balance of calm and chaos.
Bonus features and Gameplay
The Wild Symbol:
The wild symbol of this slot is a purple thunder snake symbol, once the wild appears on the reel it will turn it into a ‘thunder reel’. The sudden thunderous noise in the background will awaken the sleeping falcon and grant you 1 re-spin. If they land on the reel they will act as a wild.
If you manage to activate three ‘thunder reels’ or 3 re-spins you will score 5 free spins with those 3 reels remaining active whether a wild appears or not. During the free spins you might activate the other two reels making all active thunder reels that can ultimately create wonderful winning combinations. The chances of this happening is sadly very slim.
Win Both Ways:
There might be only 11 pay lines but the fact that they pay from left to right and from right to left double your chances of scoring winning combinations.
Is it worth playing?
Yes! Thunderkick might not be a household name for many yet but pretty soon it will be thanks to the glorious graphics and effort put into designing their slots. Turning Totems is unique and fun, the winnings might not always be as fantastic as you’d hope for it to be but you could always end up walking away with up to 998 times your bet after just one spin. Escape the modern world and take a journey through the desert with the Native Americans…
